Behind The Scenes at The Hair Radio Show: A Week I Won't Soon Forget..

It's been a week of amazing accomplishments for the work we do at HaiRadio.com.

A week that saw us appear in the New York Daily Newspaper on Tuesday, December 16th, 2014.  The article is called, "Doing it Again".  It was a very revealing and emotional interview in promotion of the upcoming premiere broadcast of "The Hair Radio Morning Show" on Monday, January 5th, 2015 (6am-9am).  I have to personally thank the wonderful reporter who did a remarkable job covering HaiRadio.com.  I also want to thank the great photographer who was dispatched to shoot the amazing photographs for the article.  I was completely satisfied with just the printed newspaper being delivered all over New York City but they've also included the article online at NYDailyNews.com and it's been picked up by numerous online sites.   I'm very honored.

Tuesday was a super day!  Hours after the article about HaiRadio.com hit the news stands all over the city, I was on the telephone interviewing one of my civil rights heroes, the one and only, Reverend Jesse Jackson.  Reverend Jackson and Butch Wing from the Silicon Valley are bringing this wonderful live event to New York City in January, 2015 that focuses on connecting Wall Street to Main Street to Silicon Valley to the persons on the street, literally.  We'll be bringing you so much about this on the upcoming The Hair Radio Morning Show.   Listen to the great interview with Butch who worked with Reverend Jackson on the 1984 presidential campaign and that of 1988.  They've known each other for many years and their mutual respect is evident.

There is one more huge development to share.. but I'll do that in the next few days.  I hope you follow us on Twitter @hairadio and also follow our online school @hairadioschool.

We're also looking for those who would like to be guests on the radio show premiere or bring their great products to our audience.  Amazing advertising that's wonderfully affordable and incredibly effective at HaiRadio.com  Call us 929-322-HAIR (4247).

Twenty Years of Hair Care on the Internet.. Do You Know More Today? By Kerry Hines

It's been almost twenty years since I published my first newspaper article, Should You Trust Your Hair Care to the Internet?  That article inspired many folks to think about the hair care advice they were giving and receiving over the Internet.

The Internet was very new and not many hairstylists were actually on the Internet.  There were many who did not trust the information that was on the 'net.  It could be argued that we weren't very trusting of anything at that time, especially something brand new.  That didn't really stop the DIYers of the day to sprout out whatever they wanted.  This was before there were real search engines and long before other checks and balances were in place.  The 'hair highway' was open but not much traffic.

The original article really asked if you should have a virtual hairstylist and should you really give over the reigns to your hair care.  I realized that if this article were written today the trust factor wouldn't be a factor anymore.  Today, everyone trusts the Internet, at least in most ways.

Today, it's not so much whether you should trust your hair care to the Internet but should you trust any stylist who is not on the Internet with your hair care needs.  This raises the question, are we better off today than we were before the boon of the Internet?  We're talking about what's pertinent to hair care?

Twenty years ago, we essentially had to choose a hairstylist by word of mouth.  Today we can easily ask for advice via social media.  Twenty years ago, we were only familiar with the hair products that were in our bathroom cabinets that were handed down by our mothers.  Today, we are flooded with product companies vying for our attention -again via social media.

Twenty years ago, we had the picture books in the salons and barber shops that showed us the latest styles.  Today, there is Instagram.  Again, social media wins the day.

The elephant in the room would have to be the advice -itself.  twenty years ago you really had no option but to pretty much wing it.  If you happen to catch the advice on caring for your hair after you left he salon, you were lucky.  Today, you can Google it, YouTube it and just about every other social media 'platform it'.

Twenty years of speeding on the 'hair super highway'.. Do you know more today?

Part Two: How to Turn Your Mistakes Into Entrepreneurial Gold by Kerry Hines

PART TWO:  How to Turn Your Mistakes Into Entrepreneurial Gold
I wanted to thank all of you for the wonderful feedback on the original article.  I had to incorporate that feeling of helping to change lives into a follow up piece.  I've been told it was these inspiring words from the top of the original article that connected with so many of you.

It's hard to believe but even a mistake has a purpose..
How do you take your past errors and use them to your advantage?  Many of us don't realize that our mistakes are part of the success plan.  They don't realize that our mistakes are really elements of success turned inside out.  Yes. Even mistakes have a purpose.

I believe that your past serves the greatest purpose of all in connecting you with your success.  The reason that I believe this to be true is that, just
like a unique fingerprint, so is your past.  It belongs to you and you alone.  That makes your singular experience into the best learning tool in building a foundation for your future success.  No one can have a future who does not have a past.

Many think that there is a reason for everything and if that is true then your past also represents something.  There's more than the obvious correlation between learning how not to repeat mistakes from the past.  That's a good thing but understanding why those mistake have made you into the unique person you are is the idea.  It's that uniqueness that lends itself to your success.

I guess the first thing that we must do is learn to forgive ourselves from the things that you just didn't do right.  Have you ever noticed those who made a myriad of mistakes have made the most productive lives.

Learning to look at your life with an open mind and be grateful for the mistakes made.  Also, have patience and understanding when dealing with others and focus on a positive future.  You'll accomplish your goals with few missteps.

How Hitting the Bumps Can Lead to Success by Kerry Hines

Not many will say but life's bumpy road is one of the preparations of success.  An uneasy and often difficult and unpleasant journey should be anticipated.  The success should not be viewed as merely a financial reward at the end of a rainbow but the long arduous task of daily pursuing your goals.  I have always believed it is that pursuit that not just leads you to success but IS the success!

One of the other big preparations is the cultivation of many relationships along life's bumpy road.  I have come across many who are fantastic supporters of your ideas and those who are mystified by your guts to pursue your dreams.  I have said there are bodies everywhere and some have served as speed bumps.  And yes, there is a purpose for these and all kinds of relationships, too!

My favorite stop along the bumpy road is that of financial resources.  You never have quite enough and the road is definitely a lot bumpier without it.  I think we all can agree that one of the most important components of any business is that of financial resources.

The bumpiest part of the road of success may actually be your product.  It's not without trial and tribulation that you develop the 'perfect' products.  Market research is a beneficial tool but even that is not full proof.  I've been absolutely jarred by choosing products or services that just shouldn't have been part of a business model.  This is how you endure the bumps until you get to the smooth road.

Is there really a such thing as a smooth road in business?  No.  I guess you have to re-pave your own road by making your difficult and unpleasant challenges the success you anticipated.

Are You A Hair Legend And Don't Know It by Kerry Hines

Could You Already Be a Hair Legend?  We're talking about from a professional hairstylist perspective.  We'll later take a look at some of those legendary clients who have shaped our culture with their own amazing style in an upcoming installment.  Now, I've been in and around the hairstylist  superstars for close to twenty years and I think I've finally figured it out.  These days you have the Internet and many hairstylists have literally built their careers and owe a great deal of gratitude to the Internet.  If you compare those times with these, you'll re-think what makes a hair legend most.

Let's define "hair legend" for the sake of this piece.  This is an industry professional who has been in the game for decades and knows what his or her value is in the hair and beauty industry.  It's someone whose talent is only surpassed by their commitment to their community.  The hair and beauty world would not be the same without this person as this legendary person has carved their own place in hair Americana.  Can we all name someone who would fit the bill?  I think we can.

Does being a celebrity hairstylist make you a legend in the hair and beauty world?  Probably not, right?  It probably does in the entertainment world, though.   Does it take a reality show to make you a legend?  I think early on when reality shows were first beginning to gain a foothold in the hair and beauty industry, we thought we were going to only see the best of the best.  Like many other areas in the reality spectrum, we've seen the worst of the worst and plenty of it.  There a few shining spots that we have to recognize that, too!  I am not so much talking about any particular hairstylist but the behavior we've witnessed.  It is not very legendary becoming, shall we say.

So, could you already be a legend?  I think the word fits a lot of great hairstylists out there in the game.  If you really don't know whether you're a legend or not, I guess you're probably not.  At least, not yet.  Keep working on it and you never know.

I love that there is a braiding legend, a loc legend, a cosmetologist legend, etc.  The diversity in our hair spectrum is really the celebration and I think that makes everyone a legend.

Are Men Left Out of the Natural Hair Conversation by Kerry Hines

Are Men Left Out of the Natural Hair Conversation?
I've asked many women and for the most part, they say, they weren't aware there was a conversation to be had that didn't include men.  I'm not quite sure exactly what that means but here we go.

The natural hair movement exploded on to the scene approximately 25 years ago.  Depending on your look at the time frame, that could certainly be argued. That's fine.  It's not a surprise that one might expect to have any conversations about hair as something that should be discussed by women.  If that's your mindset, then this would certainly make sense.

I believe that natural hair is much more profound than the simple cosmetics of having your hair done. Your hair is part of a community statement and those statements include men who wish to wear their hair in a natural state.  By sheer tradition, that's every man, including those of other cultures.

So, were men left out of the movement?  Is the movement still moving?  Does it now represent a bigger percentage of men that at the onset?  I believe the latter is true but with the emphasis in the media and in magazines, you really see a very uneven representation of men versus women with natural hair.

Okay, so that's established what is the natural hair conversation about and is it too later for men to join?  The natural hair conversation has many layers to it and at the very root of it is acceptance.  I believe learning to accept your natural hair is a big part of the "big chop" process.  I've been around some men who say they wanted to start their own conversations about natural hair.

Many men who wear their hair naturally are still fighting the good fight.  I did an unofficial poll and asked 5 men with natural styles,  Are men and women equal in the natural hair conversation?  4 out 5 said, "no".  I asked those men, "What will it take to gain entrance in to the conversation?"  They had no response and maybe that's the reason they are not part of the conversation.

How Much People Earn on the Internet by Kerry Hines

How Much People Earn on the Internet.. The better title of this should be, How Much People Can Earn on the Internet?  If you have an Internet business as opposed to a brick and mortar type business, does it generate more money?  If you're starting a business, should you create an online business instead?
How much are persons actually making with their homespun business ideas?  How do you generate the amount that's needed so that you can run a successful online business?  Do they also work from home?  There are many obvious answers that contribute to the many factors of earnings via the Internet.  I think this article will shed some light on the topic.

I recall the first dollar that I made on the Internet, it was back in 2004.  I had just created the HaiRadio Broadcast Internet, the world's first 24 hour broadcast radio network on hair and beauty.  What I earned at that time versus the potential at that time was the size of an the Atlantic Ocean.  There are so many original careers that have transitioned from the traditional office setting to the Internet and the incomes have also gone along.

If you're a writer, you can earn anywhere from $5,00 a year to over $75,000 a year.  It depends on the type of writing you're pursuing.  Someone who produces a web series that has a big following, has the potential to make 5 or even 6 figures a year.  This particular area depends greatly on the producer's effort to effectively market the show and make the necessary connections to possibly brand it with ancillary marketing, etc.

There are those who have started small businesses and are able to generate the high five figures to well over six figures.  We're not looking at the corporate giants who don't really count in this regard as there online efforts are just a continuity of their brick and mortar businesses.  They are successful because of their offline efforts and they are just discovering the benefits of switching to an online enterprise.

I believe that the earning potential online is greater than offline in the sense of the sheer reach of the Internet.  It exposes you to the world.  That's definitely not the case with a traditional offline business. We can safely say that how much people earn online or offline can only be limited by their beliefs and their will.

Have Misconceptions on Race Created An Unfair Justice System?

Have Misconceptions on Race Created an Unfair Justice System?  Dr. Nazgol Ghandnoosh shares findings in her amazing report and interview!

Interview with Dr. Nazgol Ghandnoosh

Link to: Report: Race and Punishment Racial Perceptions of Crime and Support for Punitive Policies"

Dr. Nazgol Ghandnoosh is a Research Analyst at The Sentencing Project, where she conducts and synthesizes research on criminal justice policies and crime.  She is the author of the recent report, "Race and Punishment:  Racial Perceptions of Crime and Support for Punitive Policies," which she was extensively covered in the New York Times.  With March Mauer, she has also written "Fewer Prisoners, Less Crime:  A Tale of Three States" and "Can We Wait 88 Years to End Mass Incarceration?"  Nazgol edits The Sentencing Project's monthly Race and Justice Newsletter.

Our interview focuses on the amazing and well researched report "Race and Punishment:  Racial Perceptions of Crime and Support for Punitive Policies".  I encourage everyone to take some time to review the findings in this report.

My favorite part of the interview was that many individuals don't find themselves to be overt racists but there's been many different factors which have contributed to this issue and exacerbated the problem.

Dr. Ghandnoosh shares her thoughts on Ferguson, Missouri and some of the recent cases that we've covered in our nightly news.  Is it really just black and white?  Does the environment contribute to the issues at hand?

Dr. Ghandnoosh also shares her closure on the report and what advice we can do to change the situation.  Amazing words!

How to Turn Your Mistakes into Entrepreneurial Gold by Kerry Hines

It's hard to believe but even a mistake has a purpose..

How do you take your past errors and use them to your advantage?  Many of us don't realize that our mistakes are part of the success process.  They don't realize that our mistakes are really elements of success turned inside out.  Yes.  Even mistakes have a purpose.

Being an entrepreneur, it has taught me to utilize everything.  So, I have found a use for my errors in life.  I record them and seek the understanding of the lesson.  Making that mistake makes you an expert the next time you encounter that situation.  You cannot become an expert in that effort without that tried and true experience.

Are all mistakes equal?  Well, yes and no.  Don't focus so much on the size of the mistake but the fact that every error, every mistake was well worth the effort.  You should also understand that life is filled with our ability to make these errors.  If there was no purpose behind them, life would be perfect and not rewarding, as we know it.

Can you benefit from the mistakes of others?  Yes, but I love nothing better than making my own mistakes and having to correct them.  I do find myself listening to my friends and colleagues about their own mistakes.  I heed to advice, usually.  Most times I'll follow my own thought process, anyway.

My advice is to focus on building a supportive network of friends and mentors and work them.  Let them help you to build contacts and show you the ropes.

Making mistakes will teach you how to become a gold miner in the entrepreneurial gold rush of success!

How to Work for Yourself Today and Tomorrow.. Easy Steps to Change Your Life

How to Work for Yourself Today and Tomorrow..
Easy Steps to Change Your Life
Are you working for folks who don't appreciate your time or talent.  Have you always wanted to open a business or write a book?  I have helped many pursue their dreams of letting go of the shackles of a 9 to 5 prison and moved them towards a rewarding daily journey.

What are the steps you should take?  Is this possible for anyone to do it and the big question, does it take lots of money to be saved in the bank before embarking on this scary road.  There are some definite steps that I feel you should do before looking to leave that job and yes anyone can do it with success!  It does require funding but not necessarily mountains of cash.

Is this a scary transition?  I think it's scarier to not pursue your passion in life.  It's difficult for me to understand how someone could go their entire life without attempting to see if they could ever have made it with their dream.  I don't think I wanted to reach my golden years and have to think of not having tried.  I found that to be unacceptable.

So, how do you learn to trust your gift?  First, do you know what your gift is and what's the difference between your gift and a talent?  And the difference between your talent and a knack?  Well, those things matter as there is a plan to becoming independent.  Also, keep in mind that independence does not necessarily mean independently wealthy.  I do feel though that pursuing your own passion in life makes you rich.

My first advice to anyone thinking about leaving their current work situation in pursuit of their goals, follow my advice.  First, pick up my book, "How to Get Rich in the Hair Business", because even if you're not in the hair business it has many little know business secrets to get you on your way.  You can always get it off Amazon.com.  It's the best investment to begin your new journey.

Let's put together some of the next steps for you to focus on.  Speak with a professional in the field, like HaiRadio.com.  We're available to give you free coaching and help you make that all important transition to the greatest life.  Call us.. 800-526-2610, ext 2.  Free business consultation (for a limited time).

The Hair Industry Forms New Coalition to Combat Violence in Our Communities

The Coalition of Hair Professionals Against Violence
A coalition is being formed that is made up of hair industry professionals from across the hair spectrum. These hair professionals are looking to make a difference in their communities by stamping out violence and providing a support system.

This type of civic effort is much more focused than just bringing attention to the issues that plague our communities.  We're looking to make a difference and starting with the democratic process.  It's our one true source where we can have our voices heard.  The beauty of all of this, pardon the play on words, is that we have the best resource available, our hair salons, barbers shops, etc.

Who should join us and why?  If you're in and or around the hair industry, this is your voice, however, it's open to all who share the passion to make positive changes in their communities.    We're looking establish the coalition and to move it forward with smart objectives.

The hair salons and barber shops pretty much cover every person in that community at some point or another and is the perfect space to bring persons together.

Our coalition looks to increase knowledge in the democratic process and will do all to help with the voting effort.  We need to begin to elect our own officials and support our own causes that will make a difference in our daily lives.

Hair industry:  Now, you can do more than beautify the folks in the community, you can beautify the community.  If you'd like to help us accomplish greater things.. Email:  Kerry@HaiRadio.com .

3 Time Tony Award Winning Broadway Legend Hinton Battle Joins Kerry Hines for an Interview

Interview with Hinton Battle & Kerry Hines
To Listen to interview with Hinton Battle.. Click the hyperlink:  Interview with Hinton Battle
Watch Special Performance.. Click the hyperlink:  Hinton Battle, Phyllis Hyman

You know Hinton Battle from his breakout performance in Broadway's original presentation of "The Wiz".  He co-starred with folks like Mabel King and Stephanie Mills.  Hinton's next major Broadway project was "Sophisticated Ladies" with Gregory Hines and Phyllis Hyman.  It was also his first Tony Award win.  He went on to The Tap Dance Kid with great talents like television stars Dule Hill and Alfonso Ribeiro.  Not to mention dance king, Savion Glover.  This, of course, was another Tony Award winning role.  Hinton was also in many other shows and starred on Broadway in Dreamgirls and also the hit movie version, too!  His third Tony Award win was for Miss Saigon.  This show was of particular importance as it was not a 'dancing' role.

Hinton Battle is known as a a triple threat in the entertainment world.  He just released his first CD in the US.  It's called, "Hinton Battle Something New".  He's taken many of the great classic jazz songs and kind of freshens them up for today's audiences.  Staying true to the original recording.

Hinton Battle is also starring in a special for just one night in "Cindy".  It's based on his 1978 television special.  The one performance will be in Decatur, Georgia on
September 10th, 2014.  If you're in the area, check him out.

10th Anniversary of The HaiRadio Broadcast Network

It's hard to believe it's been ten years since we launched the world's first 24 hour hair and beauty radio network.  We were so ahead of our time and that's still true today at HaiRadio.com.  Just to be clear, The Hair Radio Show started in 1995.  I am pictured here with natural hair legend, Nekhena Evans at the Museum of Televison & Radio.

I'm often asked how I came up with the idea for the show and for the network.  Today, the Internet is flooded with those who have traveled in my footsteps.  I am thrilled that the genre I created is alive and well.  We've helped the careers of so many hairstylists, barbers, product companies and others.  We've been to many hair shows and created our own signature brand for marketing others.

Why hair?  That's a good question.  I have always supported the hair and beauty industry and made significant strides towards helping others to see our industry in a very professional light.

We've had way too many successes to mention here but I would like to say thank you for being a great supporter to us and those who've helped us.

What's next for the HaiRadio Broadcast Network?  We'll let you tune in and find out.

Moment to Moment: My March with Reverend Al Sharpton for NY Choke Hold Victim, Eric Garner

Saturday morning I woke up and decided that I had to be part of this event.  It was a rare opportunity to vocalize the frustration so many men of color have faced in dealing with the police, especially in recent times. I am naturally a pacifist and am not really comfortable being in a confrontational position.  I have always believed that violence is for those who don't have the ability to communicate verbally.
Where did this sudden motivation come from?  I believe it was a transitional event for me.  I don't think I'll ever have the same, prior to the event, views that I had regarding race and things like that.
I live in Brooklyn, New York.  My area is very close to Staten Island but our illustrious train system could not simply travel from my home to the stage site for the march.  I had to travel to downtown Manhattan, then jump on the Staten Island Ferry.  I have to say that ordinarily this much travel would have been enough for me to change my mind and stay home.  Remain in my comfort confines.

I had an epiphany.  I realized that I could not sit this one out and continue to experience the horrible level  of racism where New York is now. Many of you recall the Barney's incident with their racial profiling.  It's really inconceivable to experience this inhuman treatment and the perpetrators not be affected by the incredible and indelible harm that it creates.

Well, before I even arrived at the location in lower Manhattan to board the ferry, I made eye contact with several other young men of color, who were obviously traveling to the same event.  We were all on the local train heading toward the ferry pick up spot. We felt the need to acknowledge one another.  This was something that never really happens in my regular day to day world and probably theirs either.

Upon arriving at the ferry terminal in Manhattan I saw a huge crowd of folks disembarking, many families, organizations, workers and police.  We were all making our way to the outside to find the meet up location to begin our march.  Again, this was my first time at a march so I really had no idea what I should do and since I didn't know anyone or what to say.  I just looked straight ahead and followed the crowd.  I later realized that it was the first civil rights rally for many of us.

It was very cloudy outside and there was little sun, if any.  I thought it might rain so I did have the wherewithal to grab my trusty tiny umbrella before leaving from my house.  I didn't want to get wet and then kind of be stuck in midst of a sea of people.  As it turned out, the rain clouds kinda held off and we made our way from the outside of the ferry terminal to the staging area.  Not an easy feat as the crowd was increasing by the minute.

I stopped to ask a few individuals why it was so important to them to be at the event.  I, of course, knew the answer as I felt the same sense of necessary purpose.  I could not let this event slip by and just be silent. The wrong doers are expecting our silence.  There were others who clearly felt the same from near and far.

I encountered a gentleman sitting on a bench along the march route.  He seemed a bit disheveled and unkempt. I believe he may have been Italian.  Not sure and I didn't ask.  I asked his name and he didn't want to share it and I didn't push it.  I will say he seemed to a good communicator, even though he appeared a bit intoxicated.  He said that he lived near the march's location and wanted to come out.  He probably wanted to add.. "and drink" to the sentence but it's not for me to judge.

There were many different individuals from so many different colors and backgrounds and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.  I had imagined that it would be an event where only blacks would be gathering.  I have to say I think the non-blacks were more vocal than us blacks, and that was a great occurrence.  It was nice to see that no one could be happy when your brothers are in pain.

The signs that I read were quite moving all by themselves.  They ranged from kind words to outright angry words geared towards the police. Along with the signs, the chants started.  Like this.. "What do we want?" and the response.. "Peace" from the crowd and "When do we want it?" and the response, "Now". There were so many other chants.. all inspiring and all screamed out to the top of everyone's lungs.

We marched and marched and marched, it may have not been too far but it seemed very far as the crowd was so large.  Don't trust the newspapers who report on a couple of thousand participants.  I was there and witnessed what seemed to me to be about 10,000. It was just a people sea, if you will.   The blocks of the march seemed narrow and winding.

Finally, we reached the destination of the marchers where there was a staged area that was set up for speakers.  I was about a block away from the staged area but they had one of those jumble-tron units, so I could see and hear clearly.  I perched myself up against the fence and froze in place as I listened to one eloquent speaker after the next.  Then, Reverend Al Sharpton took the stage and soared with his message of hope and peace to the gathering.  There were several poignant moments by the family members of the victim who all spoke at the podium.  They all said how grateful they were that so many of us showed our support to her husband and that "..today, we all know his name".

Listening to the speakers and witnessing the historical event with my own eyes was remarkable in itself.  I will forever carry this march in my mind as I go about pushing forward in the world.
